Round 3 League Double-Header

Division 1 League

Holloway Gaels 7-03

Tara Ladies 2-06

Saturday 27th April 2024

Our Intermediate team got their 2024 competitive season underway on Saturday 27th April in Tottenhall in Round 3 of the league. Due to the first two fixtures needing to be rescheduled due to lack of referees this was the first competitive outing for the girls under the new management team of Oran and Cliona.

Playing 13-a-side against a young, strong Tara Ladies side, this was a test of fitness and footballing skill. Tara got the better start from the throw-in and were dominating possession in the opening spell, however any attacks towards the Holloway backline were dealt with successfully. Against the run of play it was Holloway goal machine Marian O'Donnell who raised the green flag first after some driving runs by the Holloway mid-field and half-forwards. Tara regained possession after the goal and went about levelling the score line with 3 points of their own before a looping pass to the back post from Emma Mulhern was palmed to the back of the net by Mary Adebamiye. Tara added a goal of their own to the scoresheet before Marian added her second of the day. The whistle for half time blew shortly after Muls and Marian had added a point each to Holloways tally.

The second half started with another Mary and Muls interchange, this time with Muls on the score sheet after some Mary overturned the ball leaving the Tara backline to set up Muls who made a dart through the middle. And of course, Marian followed up with a goal of her own. Tara hit their purple patch then and scored 1-02 without reply leaving the score line 5-02 to 2-05 with 10 minutes to go. Trea Hourigan won a great ball on the right wing before coolly slotting it over the bar, Marian followed up with 2 more goals before Tara got a point before the final whistle. Great work put in by the 13 girls on the day with some serious running throughout the hour. Well done to the team and management.

Emma Mulhern has been named captain of the Intermediate team for the season with Rosie Dullea named as vice-captain. We wish them both, along with the new management team of Oran Hilley and Cliona Twohig the best of luck for the year ahead.

Division 3 League

Holloway Gaels 2-02

Tara Ladies 2-06

With Round 2 of the league having to be rescheduled, our Junior team got back on the pitch for round 3 verses Tara Ladies. After watching the first half of the Division 1 game, our girls under the management of Emily de Caires and Pat Walls got ready for the task at hand. Also playing 13-a-side the test of fitness and footballing continued into the second game. Holloway started off the brighter side in contrast to the first game and dominated the opening spell. A superb goal from the boot of mid-fielder Erin Giblin raised the first umpire flag of the day and this was quickly followed by a wonderful goal from vice-captain Lia O'Rourke who found space on the 13 to quickly slot the ball past the Tara keeper. Tara Ladies gained some momentum after this and pressed the Holloway backs and keeper. Our girls were up to the challenge and confidently snuffed out many attacks, Tara managed one point in this period. Serious hard work was going on all around the pitch by the girls and when Mairéad O'Donnell sent an inviting pass into the full-forward line, Caoimhe Giles used her guile to beat her player and send over a wonderful point in return. Before the half ended a penalty was awarded to Tara but this was deftly stopped and cleared by Aisling Clifford in goal.

The second half was tightly fought with the Holloway half back, mid-field and half forward lines running themselves into the ground. No watches allowed but if they had the Strava's would have been impressive! Tara Ladies fought their way back into the game with 1-03, with 10 minutes to go it was all evens. Aisling Clifford who had moved to the forward line in the second half slotted over a wonderful point from a free to give Holloway the narrowest of leads going into the final 7 minutes. The entire Holloway team worked tirelessly in the remaining minutes but Tara found their way through for a goal and 2 points before the long whistle. A disappointing end to such a close, well fought game but with many stand out moments there was lots to take from the performance. Great work rate and commitment shown by all players on the day. Well done to all.
