The League season got underway with our girls facing Wandsworth Gaels in the opening match of Division 3. In a warm but breezy Wormwood Scrubs our girls got ready to face the team who won the Ann Dunning Plate competition 3 weeks previously.
In the first half, our girls played with the breeze against a strong Wandsworth side. There were some great periods of play and defending from our girls throughout the half who did well to hold Wandsworth to a point at the short whistle. Holloway scores coming from Erin Giblin after some great play by Grace Hanrahan and Mia Kelly and the second from the left boot of Emer O’Leary after a nice one-two with Lia O’Rourke.
Playing into the breeze in the second half was testing but it was Holloway who had the first attack of the period, straight from the throw in but Wandsworth defended well to snuff out the chance. Holloway had a number of attacking chances in the half that they worked tirelessly to create but the breeze took its toll, and we were unlucky not to convert on a number of occasions. Our mid-field duo of Grace and Kate O’ Brien ran the length of the pitch several times over today and it was great to see the determination and tenacity of all our girls to the final whistle. The goalkeeper and defenders deserve a special mention, faced with a running team with a strong breeze behind them it would have been easy to become disorganised. However, through great communication and sheer hassle and hard work the back 7 (or 9 including our subs) and their 2 mid-fielders gave the Wandsworth forwards something tough to overcome on each of their attacks.
Huge well done to the team and management on their opening game of the season. Lots of positives to take.
The Junior Team have strong leadership again this season. Shane Hanrahan has taken on the role of team manager for 2024 with assistant managers Emily de Caires and Pat Walls. Sinéad Donnelly has been named the team captain for the season. We wish them and the team a successful and happy season.
